Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

We sat down as a group and decided that our audience would be 15+; this was because our thriller is a psychological and elements of religion genre. However, a thriller has conventions of murder and death, we thought that if a 10 year old watched this it could be quite traumatic to them. Also with the tension always building at a high atmosphere then it could also scare anyone younger than 15. We handed out questionnaires for people of 14+ this is because we wanted to see what a younger person’s views on the questions we had designer to help us get information from our audience. A lot of the questionnaires came back saying that they thought it should be 15+ also. So this finalized our decision of what age rating we would give it. We decided that we wouldn’t aim our thriller opening at a certain gender, that we aim it to both genders and that they both can watch it. We didn’t want to be almost sexist, with all of our groups being girls; we thought it would be unfair to just aim it at girls. This widens our audience range as well.

We researched our audience by using our questionnaires; this was useful to us because we were able to collect different people’s opinions on the questions, we asked them questions such as ‘What do you look for in a Thriller movie’ this gave us an idea on what they would like, such as if they like crime, action, religious elements, psychological or other sub-genre motions that could be involved. This way of collecting data is one of the most useful ways, even though they have set questions and answers they have to fill out, we still get a varied reply. People will more likely want to fill out a questionnaire because it is anonymous they don’t have to give out their details, this encourages our audience and we can trust the results to be true.

We also had a look at the BBFC website to see what rating we would give our thriller opening, we would out that our thriller would have to be a 15+, this is because of the violence that is found, we decided that it would be too distressing to any younger viewers. Also we decided that was the rating because our target audience was only 15 over. So if we said that our thriller was a 13+ then we would be targeting younger audience members, this isn’t what we wanted.
