Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The key character in our thriller opening is ‘The Girl’; this character is a mystery to the audience because she is thrown straight into the storyline without any introduction or background story. We went straight into the introduction of the character by her entering into the house, with no explanation of how or why she is there.
The picture to the side is Mia, one of our group’s members that played ‘The Girl’ in our opening.
We decided that we wanted the audience to wonder why this girl has all of a sudden appeared, why is she here? What has happened to her to lead up to her arriving at this place? What has she got to do with this whole situation?
We wanted ‘The Girl to be the victim of this opening, we want to audience to make up their minds whether she is someone’s girlfriend, or what the connection between the person that is also in the opening but hasn’t appeared yet.
We decided that we would use Mia as our victim because she is 16 years old, blonde and naïve looking. This helps with the appearance of being vulnerable and not being able to defend her if she is in a situation that she will need to. She has a pure look also, we decided that we would have her in white to emphasise the pureness of her; this goes with her blonde hair also.
Having a knee length white dress shows the audience that she is innocent, does get her hands dirty, it also makes the audience question why she is in this place when it is so obvious that she doesn’t belong here. Everything about this place is dark and dangerous however, when ‘The Girl’ walks into view there is lightness about her.
We used very little make up on Mia to give her a natural look, this was to lift her features such as her eyes for the camera. We decided that we wouldn’t use a lot because we didn’t want her character to be covered in make-up and make her look older than we wanted her to be. Using little make-up helped to keep Mia looking young and innocent.
With the make-up, the costume and props they all represent the innocence and also mystery of her past. We don’t really know what has happened to her to get her to this point.
Our character had one significant prop on her person at all times and the opening referred to towards the end, this was the silver bracelet with the silver ball. This is a key prop because near the end when ‘The Girl’ finds the dead pictures of two girls, they both had the same bracelet as her. Someone gave this bracelet to her and that person also gave two the same or the same one to the other girls that are dead in the photo.
I think that the similarities between ‘The Girl’ and the female victim in Psycho are that they are both blonde and they are both very vulnerable. They have both gone to places where no one else is around; they both have props that are significant to their character. The woman from Psycho has a lot of money and our character has her bracelet. These comparisons are very similar to each other, which is what we wanted to accomplish. They both end up getting killed and left where the audience think no one will find them.
Psycho’s character doesn’t wear light coloured clothing, she is wearing quite dark colours, this could tell us that they didn’t want her to have that pure, venerable look to her; it tells me that she can stand her own. This is the same as our character Mia, she wears light make up and is dressed in white. The Girl is also blonde as well as Marion who is dressed in white with light make-up and blonde they are both female, which gives the innocence and vulnerability.
